STANTON, Ky. (AP) - The funeral for a small-town police chief
fatally shot in the line of duty attracted hundreds of
law-enforcement officers from every corner of Kentucky Sunday.
Squad cars from Paducah in the west to Pikeville in the east
lined the parking lot of Powell County High School, the site of a
memorial service for Randy Lacy - Clay City's chief and lone police
officer.
Two fire trucks with ladders hoisted a giant American flag
marking the entrance to the high school. Another American flag
hanging from a fire truck marked the way to the burial at West End
Cemetery in Clay City and a city squad car was parked across the
street decorated in flowers.
Lacy, 55, was shot point blank in the back of the head in his
squad car Wednesday while making a routine DUI arrest, authorities
said. The suspect, Jamie Barnett, 37, is being held without bond on
a murder charge.
Lacy's family members, many of whom are also active in law
enforcement, described him as a giving man who would respond to any
local emergency, no matter how small.
"My brother Randy was a police officer," said Garland Lacy, a
court bailiff and sheriff's department chaplain. "Today we
celebrate him as a fallen hero."
