One dead, another critical after apartment building catches fire

CLAY CITY, Ky. (AP) - A man died Tuesday after a fire broke out in a central Kentucky apartment building, a coroner said.

The man helped a woman out of a window after the blaze started, but he was unable to escape, Powell County Coroner Carl Wells said.

A helicopter flew the woman to the University of Kentucky hospital where she was in critical condition, WKYT-TV reported.

The blaze at the two-story apartment building in Clay City was reported at 6:23 a.m. EDT, a Powell County dispatcher said.

There had been 38 fire deaths reported in Kentucky this year prior to Tuesday, the state fire marshal's office said.

Clay City, 40 miles from Lexington, is still reeling from the loss of its police chief, Randy Lacy, who was shot to death last week while making an arrest.
