Hearing On Immigration Reform Draws Large Crowd

Video will be available shortly

Lexingtonians on both sides of whether there should be stricter immigration laws spoke at a forum Tuesday night.

Mayor Jim Newberry created a new commission to deal with immigration concerns in Fayette County.

Tuesday was the group's first forum.

More than 40 people signed up to speak.

Some were in favor of a path to legal status for those here illegally.

Others said they aren't against immigrants, but say the law should be enforced.

During the forum, those in favor of stricter laws broke into applause, which sparked warnings from the commission.

Another immigration forum will be held in August.

The commission's final report is due back to the mayor in September.
