One person seriously hurt in apartment fire

A woman is rushed to the hospital after a fire breaks out in her apartment.

The fire also displaced a number of other families who lived in the building.

The fire broke out on South Third Street around 7 a.m. Friday.

As smoke filled the building, residents tried to rescue a woman trapped in the apartment that was on fire but couldn't get to her.

Firefighters arrived and were able to get her out.

She was taken to UK hospital and is in serious condition.

Firefighters had to use ladders to rescue people on higher floors from their windows.

EMS crews treated half a dozen people at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Several pets were also rescued from the building.

The apartment where the fire started was destroyed.

The rest of the building suffered smoke damage.

Investigators are still on scene trying to determine an exact cause.

They do say the fire started in the bed of the woman who was taken to the hospital.

She was a known smoker who was on oxygen and investigators believe that may have started the fire.
