Donna and James Garrett appeared in the Powell County Courthouse Tuesday. Donna Garrett is charged with theft by unlawful taking of more than $10,000, and her husband James is charged with receiving stolen property.

Garrett is accused of stealing at least $13,000 cash from a family member, who reportedly kept large sums of money in a safe at home.

"Unfortunately because of the time we're in, someone's going to try and take advantage of that," says Trooper Endre Samu, with Kentucky State Police.

To make matters worse, investigators say the theft took place between Christmas Eve and Christmas day, when the unsuspecting victim was away for the holidays.

Police say some of the money has been returned, but there still could be several thousands of dollars missing.

While 27 Newsfirst tried to catch up with the Garretts and their attorney in court, all declined to comment at this time.

Since this incident, police say the victim no longer keeps the cash at home for their own safety.
