It's what students and fans are talking about Monday morning, the basketball cats moving up the polls to number one. A fan went so far Monday morning to put a banner outside Coach Cal's home on Richmond Road, celebrating the new ranking.
Howard Stovall says he and a client wanted to put the sign in front of Coach Cal's home so that people would have pride in the team as they drove by. His company, Signs Now, made the banner and placed it outside Coach Calipari's home around 5 a.m. Late this afternoon the city moved the banner, which was a traffic hazard in the area that it was hanging. It has now been moved to the Martin Luther King overpass across Vine Street. Stovall says he just hopes the team and Coach Cal get to see the sign congratulating them on the number one ranking.
The coaches poll put UK in the number one spot unanimously; the team received all 31 first place votes. The Associated Press also had UK ranked first in a unanimous decision, the team received all the first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.
Students say it's a great, even if it's made it tough for some to get tickets to games. Tickets to ESPN's College Game Day, which will be at Rupp Arena February 13, were distributed Monday morning at the Rupp box office; you can also get them online at ticketmaster.com, but you will have to pay a processing fee.
You can also tell everyone who's number one with a brand new t-shirt.
"Back On Top" t-shirts are already hitting several Lexington stores, marking the Cats' return to the top of the polls.
Kennedy Book Store, near the UK Campus, Fan Outfitters at Tates Creek Centre, and Cat Fan-Attic on Harrodsburg Road are selling the shirts.
You can also buy them at ukteamshop.com.
