Jury returns not guilty verdict in bid-rigging trial

By JEFFREY McMURRAY
Associated Press Writer
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A federal jury has acquitted a former
Kentucky cabinet secretary and a prominent road contractor of
bribery and other charges.
The jury in Lexington reached the verdict Friday afternoon in
its second day deliberating the fate of former Transportation
Secretary Bill Nighbert and contractor Leonard Lawson.
The verdict ends a lengthy federal probe into allegations of
corruption and cronyism that investigators said tainted the state's
process of awarding highway contracts.
The pair could have faced decades in prison if convicted on all
counts.
