NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A man celebrated Independence Day and his new United States citizenship in Jessamine County, yesterday.
Close to two decades ago, Albir Abrahim's family spent their days in a desert between Jordan and Iraq, unsure if they would survive, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports. The family had abandoned all of their possessions in Kuwait and hitched rides with truckers who were transporting refugees to Jordan during the Gulf War.
Abrahim gained his citizenship earlier this week and celebrated with dozens of family members yesterday.
Abrahim's youngest daughter, Lames, says learning English was the biggest challenge for her father. She says he is much happier in America.
