Lexington man kills self following standoff

Video will be available shortly

Lexington, KY - The Fayette County Coroner's office has ruled the death of a Lexington man late last night as a suicide, by self-inflicted gunshot. The office did not, however, as of early morning, release the identity of the 55-year old white male.

The apparent suicide followed a standoff that lasted for several hours beginning around 8 p.m. in a south Lexington neighborhood. Police surrounded the home at 4608 Oak Creek Drive and the standoff ended after midnight.

Police were called to the scene after a report from a man who said someone fired a gun at him and two others while they were inside a vehicle nearby. The three people were not injured. The man told police a suspect could be found at 4608 Oak Creek Drive, a home owned by William and Jean Caplin.

Witnesses said shots were fired at police and a large crowed gathered in the usually quiet neighborhood along between Tates Creek Road and Hartland Parkway.

Lexington police and SWAT teams entered the home after midnight after sending a robot unit in to see if it was safe.
