Fayette Senator Says Airport Funds Assured, Politics Behind Pressure

Posted: Sun 1:32 PM, Jul 08, 2007

Lexington, Ky. - Fayette State Senator Ernesto Scorsone says Bluegrass Airport officials' concerns over state funding for runway expansion are unfounded, that money for the project is assured and pressure by them to decide now may be politically motivated.

Democrat Ernesto Scorsone says all parties in the state General Assembly are in agreement on the need for runway improvements following the Flight 5191 tragedy and he's certain the money will be made available during the regular legislative session in January in time for any federal support.

Scorsone was reacting to concerns by Airport Executive Director Michael Gobb that a decision on the funding must come within 90 days. Funding for the airport is on the agenda of the current special session in Frankfort. The special session is in limbo after House democrats moved to adjourn this past week within hours of convening.

Scorsone says pressure by airport officials may be a favor to Governor Fletcher - who is seeking reelection- and is urging House democrats to return so the session can decide on the airport matter and some 66 others items on the agenda.
