Opponents Of Liquor Sales Organizing In Berea

Print

BEREA, Ky. (AP) - Opponents of alcohol sales in Berea restaurants are starting to organize in preparation for a July 31st referendum.

If the proposal passes, alcohol by the drink would be allowed in restaurants that seat at least 100 and get at least 70 percent of their income from food sales.

Dry forces plan to meet this Thursday evening in hopes of building opposition to the referendum. Among the opponents is Jim Upton, who with his wife owns and operates a pizzeria and ice cream parlor in the town south of Richmond in central Kentucky.

Upton says he opposes alcohol sales on moral grounds, but also questions whether it would stimulate economic development in Berea.
