Just two months after being arrested on several charges including bribery and fraud, a Kentucky Mayor is back in jail tonight.
For much of the day Wednesday, Kentucky State Police were at Mt. Vernon City Hall investigating an incident that took place shortly after noon. According to an arrest citation, Kentucky State Police say they received a complaint about Mayor Clarice Kirby and when they arrived on scene found employees noticeably upset.
Employees told police the Mayor was confrontational with them in reference to an ongoing criminal investigation that surrounds her where she is accused of official misconduct, abusing public trust, and bribery among other charges. Police say the investigation began last summer and among other crimes, Mayor Kirby allegedly bought alcohol for work release inmates. She was recently arrested for the charges, pleading 'not guilty' in court, but today found herself back behind bars.
One City Hall employee told KSP the mayor questioned her about her involvement in this case and told office staff they wouldn't receive pay raises because of lack of loyalty.
Today the Commonwealth Attorneys Office filed a motion to revoke Kirby's bond after she was charged with four counts of Retaliating Against a Participant in the Legal Process. It has now been ordered no bond be set for Mayor Kirby until her revocation hearing.
We did contact Clarice Kirby at the jail to see if she'd be willing to speak with us, but she denied our request for an interview.
Mayor Clarice Kirby had a hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. No word yet if it will now be moved up because of the new charges.
