China Discontinues Use Of Toxic Substace In Toothpaste Production

BEIJING (AP) - China's official news agency says the country has banned toothpaste companies from using a thickening agent used in antifreeze in its products.

The ban on diethylene glycol is the latest move to raise confidence in the country's food and drug safety procedures.

Chinese-made toothpaste containing the substance has been banned in North and South America and Asia. And the European Union said yesterday that two brands of toothpaste sold in Spain have been pulled from store shelves after the substance was found.

There have been no reports of health problems stemming from the
toothpaste.
