President Insists On US Success In Iraq

Print

WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush is insisting that the US must succeed in Iraq, vowing to push ahead in spite of a report that says the Iraqi government has not yet fully met any of 18 goals for political, military and economic reform.

The report says that despite progress on some fronts by the government, "the security situation in Iraq remains complex and extremely challenging," the "economic picture is uneven" and political reconciliation is lagging.

In all, it credited the Iraqi government with satisfactory progress on eight benchmarks, unsatisfactory progress on another eight and mixed results on the other two.

Bush also says he values the advice of Republicans in Congress who are voicing concerns about the path the U-S is taking in Iraq.

But Bush told reporters today he has an obligation to listen to his commanders in Iraq -- and that's what he's going to do.
