Eleven Kentuckians Died In Holiday Driving Crashes

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Preliminary statistics indicate that eleven people died in ten separate crashes on Kentuckys roadways during the five-day Independence Day holiday reporting period.

The period ran from six p-m Tuesday through 11:59 p-m on Sunday. No highway fatalities were reported on the fourth of July.

State police say five of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and one of the victims was not wearing a seat belt. One of the motor vehicle crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol. Single-fatality motor vehicle crashes occurred in Boyd, Fayette, Hart, Jackson and Shelby counties.

Three motorcycle crashes resulted in four fatalities. Three of the victims were not wearing helmets and one crash involved the suspected use of alcohol. One double-fatality motorcycle crash was reported in Metcalfe County. Single-fatality motorcycle crashes occurred in Elliott and McCreary counties.

One single-fatality ATV crash occurred in Owsley County. The victim was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is a suspected factor. Jefferson County reported one fatality involving a bicycle rider. During the four-day July fourth holiday period last year, there were 16 fatalities on Kentucky roadways.
