Police Investigate Highway Fatalities In Two Counties

Morehead, Ky. - Police report fatal accidents in Fleming and Powell Counties -yesterday and last night - killing a Georgetown man and a man from Ewing in separate mishaps.

The Morehead Post of the Kentucky State Police reports 40 year old Harry Homer Heflin II, of Georgetown, died when he lost control of his motorcycle on Kentucky Route 15 near Coomer Ridge in Powell County. Police say Heflin ran off the road and struck a large boulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Powell County Coroner Carl Wells Sr. An investigation is continuing.

Police also report 35-year old Donnie R. Mitchell of the Fleming County community of Ewing died when he lost control of his pickup turning from Cowan Road onto Ewing Road (KY165). His vehicle traveled over an earth embankment on the east side of the roadway striking a utility pole. A passenger, 17-year old John Shoemaker, also of Ewing, sustained injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to the Fleming County Hospital.

Police say neither of the victims was wearing a seatbelt and the accident remains under investigation.
