Economy taking its toll on Derby festivities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The economy is taking its toll on
Kentucky Derby festivities.

The Courier-Journal reports the long-running Grand Gala party,
which has attracted celebrities like Michael Jordan, won't take
place this year.

It is the second prominent Derby party to be canceled in as many
weeks. Last week organizers announced the 2010 Mint Jubilee would
not go on.

The Grand Gala began as a charity fundraiser in 2002. Organizer
Rohena Miller said the event will be replaced this year by a
private function for business people on the night of the Derby.
That party will be part of a business seminar aimed at promoting
minority entrepreneurship.
