OWNINGSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky sheriff pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of buying votes and lying to a grand jury.
Bath County Sheriff Calvin Randall "Randy" Armitage, 45, of Owingsville, was indicted by a federal grand jury in June in connection with a federal investigation into vote-buying in Bath County during the May 2006 primary.
Armitage was released after entering the pleas during a hearing in federal court, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported on its Web site.
More than a dozen people in Bath County have been charged in what federal prosecutors describe as rampant vote-buying during the May election.
Former County Attorney Donald "Champ" Maze was sentenced earlier this month to 21 months in federal prison for buying votes during the May 2006 primary and lying to a federal grand jury. Judge-Executive Walter Shrout was convicted of similar charges in March.
