Small Kentucky Town Wins Online Competition To Host John Edwards

COLUMBUS, Ky. (AP) - The tiny western Kentucky town of Columbus in Hickman County has won an online contest for the right to host Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards.

A total of 18-hundred-17 votes were cast for the town, giving it a chance to host a town hall-style appearance by Edwards.

Columbus, population 229, beat cities including Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco and Seattle in the online competition sponsored by Eventful-dot-com.

Twenty-four-year-old Shawn Dixon is a Columbus native and University of Kentucky graduate who spearheaded a grassroots effort through Web sites such as MySpace and Facebook to garner support for his hometown.

Dixon says the meeting with Edwards probably won't take place in downtown Columbus. For one thing, he says there's only one main street in Columbus. The meeting will probably be in nearby Columbus-Belmont Battlefield State Park instead.
