Astronaut At Space Station Tosses Junk Into Orbit

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Space junk is floating overhead.

An astronaut took out the trash at the international space station and has hurled some old equipment into orbit.

Clayton Anderson -- who when not space walking enjoys officiating basketball games back on earth -- heaved a 14-hundred pound, refrigerator-size ammonia tank into space.

He has also chucked a less cumbersome camera mount away from the

NASA expects the massive tank to float around for a while before being sucked into the earth's atmosphere and burning up.

Small chunks of the tank will probably survive its fall next year through the atmosphere. NASA officials hope those pieces will hit the ocean.
