A southern Kentucky mother is arrested after police say she gave birth in a prison bathroom, then left the baby in a trash can, causing her death!
20-year-old Ashley Cox, of Corbin, is now charged with murder.
Investigators say she also 'lied' to prison workers about the birth.
Police say they got a call that Cox was admitted to a Louisville hospital after she told officials at the Roederer Correctional Complex in Oldham County that she had a miscarriage.
But police say she gave birth to a full term baby girl and allegedly put it inside a trash can.
Police say 20-year-old Ashley Cox went to the Roederer Correctional Facility a little after eight on Sunday Morning.
A Few hours later, she locked herself inside a bathroom.
That's when she told officials at the jail she had a miscarriage.
“It was initially thought she had a miscarriage,” Michael Webb with the Kentucky State Police says. “She was taken to the hospital by the Oldham County e-m-s for that purpose.”
But a few hours later, blood was discovered on the floor, and a full-term baby was found in a bathroom of the jail.
“They locked down the facility and performed a search of the premises,” Webb says. “Approximately a half hour later, they did discover an infant inside a trash receptacle.”
Webb says it is still not known why Cox was at the facility.
“We don't know the relationship of who she was there to visit,” Webb says. “We're not going to speculate on who the father might be at this time. We just don't have that information.”
Webb says it is just a tragic situation.
“We certainly would go out of our way and make any arrangement necessary to protect the life of a soon to be born infant,” Webb says.
In addition to a First Degree Murder Charge, Cox is also charged with concealing the birth of an infant.
Cox is being held at the Oldham County Jail. The cause of the infant's death is pending the autopsy findings.
