OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) - A road worker was killed after being stuck by sport utility vehicle while working along a western Kentucky parkway, officials said.
Julio Cesar Hernandez, 22, of Hopkinsville was working with a mowing crew in the grassy median between the northbound and southbound lanes of the William H. Natcher Parkway in Daviess County when he was struck Tuesday morning, Deputy Coroner Darrell Day said. Hernandez died at the scene, Day said.
Daviess County Sheriff's Department reports said Hernandez was hit by a red Chevrolet Blazer driven by Jessica Reyes, 19, of Troy, Mo. The reports said Reyes was driving north in the left-hand lane when she drifted into the median and struck Hernandez.
Reyes was taken to Owensboro Medical Health System with minor injuries.
Capt. Jeff Jones, chief deputy for the sheriff's department, said investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the accident.
Keith Todd, public information officer for the state highway department's Madisonville office, said about 20 people have been killed in Kentucky during the past two years in accidents at road work sites.
