Woman killed in fire at Lexington home

A Lexington woman has died after a fire broke out inside her home.

Firefighters were called to the home, on Pimlico Parkway, near Man O' War Boulevard, just before 10 Thursday morning.

Once inside, firefighters say they found the victim dead.

The coroner has identified her as 62-year-old Lillian Lewis. Investigators say she lived at the home with her husband, who had left to run an errand.

Fire crews say people driving by the home noticed the fire, and called for help.

"Apparently, the first call came from someone with the sheriff's department passing by, and that's why they are on the scene," Lexington Fire Chief Bob Hendricks said. "And also a passing firefighter off duty happened to be here before our units arrived. In all cases, nobody could make entry until the fire units were able to, due to the heavy column of smoke, almost to the floor, I'm told."

Fire officials say the fire is still under investigation. They have not yet determined a cause.

An autopsy for Lillian Lewis has been scheduled for tomorrow.
