One of Cinema's Greatest Artists Dies At Age 89

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish filmmaker
who was described by Woody Allen as the greatest film artist "since the invention of the motion picture camera," has died.

He was 89. The foundation that bears his name has confirmed the death, and a Swedish journalist says the director died peacefully in his sleep.

Bergman gained international acclaim with his 1955 romantic comedy "Smiles of a Summer Night."

From that point on, his career spanned five decades and earned him several awards -- including a 1982 Oscar for "Fanny and Alexander" as the best foreign film.

His 1957 movie, "The Seventh Seal," contains one of cinema's most famous scenes -- a knight playing chess with the shrouded figure of Death.

His last work was a made-for-T-V movie called "Saraband" that aired on Swedish public T-V four years ago. It starred actress Liv Ullman, who appeared in nine Bergman films and had a five-year affair -- and a daughter -- with him.
