Barriers not always effective

Cable barriers have become a common sight on Kentucky's highways in the past few years.

Transportation officials say they're better than concrete barriers in terms of reducing fatalities.

"They're installed in a very data driven approach where we've had a history of fatal crashes. We install those and we can see a big reduction in deaths from crossover accidents, " said Mark Brown, an official with the Kentucky Transportation Project.

Transportation officials say over the long run, the cable barriers actually save lives.
