SUV plows through a Lexington grocery store

Shoppers gathered outside the Romany Road Kroger Saturday afternoon in shock.

"I've never seen a car parked inside a grocery story before," said shopper Patricia Ellis.

Police say just before 3 p.m., a 79 year-old woman was attempting to park her car along the curb in her Cadillac Escalade. That's when they say she made a dangerous mistake.

"She told us she put her foot on the brake, but we think she hit the gas pedal," said Lt. Chris Van Brackel.

Several people inside the store were injured when the car came crashing through.

"One person had a foot ran over by the car as it came in," said Lt. Van Brackel, "and the other two people were hit by the car as it came in."

None of the injuries were life-threatening, but two customers were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver was also taken to the hospital by a relative as a precaution.

"I was standing at the service desk minutes before buying some stamps, and just barely missed being in it first-hand, myself," said shopper Mary Kelly.

Authorities say it is amazing the outcome wasn't far worse, as the store was full of customers shopping before Easter Sunday.
