Until today, the Madison County Health Department was the only one in Kentucky to consider a smoking ban, then approve it. Now, the Hopkins County Health Department in western Kentucky has been tossed the hot potato by its fiscal court.
Hopkins Fiscal Court accepted a committee's recommendation
yesterday to take no action on a smoking ban and refer the proposal
to the health department. The action followed a July 24th committee
meeting when members discussed a number of objections to a smoking
ban. The majority of the magistrates expressed concerns over an
intrusion of government into business owners' rights.
The issue first became public in November when a Hopkins County
Central High School government class petitioned Fiscal Court to ban
smoking.
