Store adds to free medication program

Meijer announced Monday it will now include a commonly prescribed type 2 diabetes drug in its free medication program. The chain will offer Metformin Immediate Release at no cost to people with a medical prescription. It will include doses prescribed in 500mg, 850mg and 1000mg tablets.
In a news release issued Monday the chain said more than 24 million Americans have diabetes, with type 2 diabetes accounting for 90-95 percent of all cases. The company says Metformin Immediate Release is believed to be the most widely prescribed anti-diabetic drug in the world.
Meijer already offers seven children's antibiotics free of charge, and free pre-natal vitamins to women.
