Richmond police say a two-year-old girl who died Thursday afternoon was murdered.

Investigators were called to an apartment on Barnes Mill road for an unresponsive child Thursday afternoon.

Two-year old Callie Robinson was taken to the hospital, where she died.

Police have charged the girl's mother, 23-year-old Verona Brinegar with murder and tampering with physical evidence.

Just after 1 a.m. the mother's boyfriend, 26-year-old Ronald Lee Crabtree was arrested.

Crabtree called the 27 NEWSFIRST newsroom from a pay phone in Monticello, saying he was innocent.

27 NEWSFIRST contacted Richmond Police, who notified authorities in Wayne County, where Crabtree was arrested.

Both Brinegar and Crabtree appeared in court this morning on the murder charge where they pleaded not guilty.

They're due back in court next week

An autopsy will be performed on Callie Robinson Friday.

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) - A central Kentucky mother and her boyfriend have been charged with murder in the death of the woman's 2-year-old daughter, police said.

Verona Brinegar, 23, and Ronald Crabtree, 26, both of Richmond, were charged because of the type of injuries the child suffered, Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock said Friday. He declined to describe the injuries.

Officers were called Thursday to investigate a report of an unconscious child, Richmond Police Sgt. Willard Reardon said.

"When officers arrived at the scene, they found suspicious injuries to the unconscious child," Reardon said.

Callie Elizabeth Robinson was taken to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center where she died, Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison said.

Brinegar is also charged with tampering with physical evidence, police said.
