Just one day before a Lexington trial was set to start involving the shooting death of a teenager, the defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Donovan Brown was accused in the December 2006 shooting of 18-year-old Darrin Bates. Brown was initially charged with murder, but that was later downgraded to reckless homicide. Brown pleaded guilty to that reckless homicide charge in a Fayette County courtroom on Monday morning.

Brown testified in court that Bates showed him the weapon and when he took the gun and cocked it, the gun went off. Bates was shot in the head.

Brown will be sentenced on September 14th.
