Man Convicted In Shooting Death Of Neighbor

Posted: Fri 9:29 AM, Aug 17, 2007

GRAYSON, Ky. (AP) - A Carter County man accused of murder in the May 2006 shooting death of his neighbor has been convicted of second-degree manslaughter. A Carter Circuit Court jury deliberated an hour and 25 minutes yesterday before finding George Gilbert Junior guilty of second-degree manslaughter.

Gilbert was convicted for the May 6, 2006, shooting of 21-year-old John Owens, who lived near Gilbert just outside Olive Hill. Witnesses testified the two men got into a fight after Gilbert intervened in a violent domestic dispute between Owens and his girlfriend.

The same jury later recommended a five-year prison sentence for Gilbert, the shortest term it could have given him. Anyone convicted of second-degree manslaughter is eligible to meet with the state parole board after they've served 20 percent of their sentences.

Because he's already spent nearly 16 months in custody, Gilbert will be parole-eligible immediately after his final sentencing. Special Judge Ron Johnson has scheduled sentencing for September 6.
