Fort Campbell Soldier's Body Pulled From Cumberland River

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A soldier based at Fort Campbell, Ky., drowned over the weekend while trying to swim across the Cumberland River, Nashville police said.

Investigators didn't immediately release the victim's name.

The soldier and a friend might have been drinking on Saturday when the victim tried to swim the river near downtown, investigators said.

The river is more than 500 feet wide in the area, said a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesman.

The soldier's body was found Sunday afternoon not far downstream
from where he went in.
