Hurricane Dean Hits Yucatan Peninsula

The National Hurricane Center says the eye of Hurricane Dean has reached Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Experts are working to pinpoint the exact location.

Dean had sustained winds of 160 mph as it closed on the Yucatan
Peninsula just north of the Mexico-Belize border.

Category 5 storms are capable of catastrophic damage but are
extremely rare. Only three have hit the U.S. since record-keeping
began.

Thousands of tourists fled the beaches of the Mayan Riviera. Though expected to escape a direct hit, Cancun still could face destructive winds.

Meteorologists say a storm surge of 12 to 18 feet is possible at
the storm's center.
