Western Kentucky Hits Bottom Of Drought Scale

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The Palmer Drought Severity Index lists "extreme" as the worst possible scenerio for a lack of rain. This week, western Kentucky's bone-dry conditions have reached that category and eastern counties are nearing the designation.

The most recent index report was released yesterday and it showed Lexington and the Bluegrass region moving farther into the severe category. The Central and Eastern regions also were in severe drought.

The index measures hydrological drought, so it is a good indication of the health of water supplies. Nicholasville announced voluntary restrictions yesterday and since last week, Lexington and nearby areas that get drinking water from Kentucky American Water have been on voluntary restrictions.
