Disc Jockey Accused Of Conning Public Enters Guilty Plea

A former Louisville disc jockey, accused of conning the public out of more than a hundred grand in charity money, enters a guilty plea.

Police say Todd Smith, who went by the on-air name of Todd Kelley, lied that he had Lou Gehrig's Disease and kept money he raised for a fake foundation.

He could face a maximum of 80 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million dollars.

Smith's mother will be sentenced next month.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Former Louisville radio personality Todd Kelly has entered a plea of guilty in federal court to charges he faked Lou Gehrig's disease and cancer, then stole as much as $150,000 donated for disease research.

Kelly, whose real name is Todd Smith, admitted guilt today to mail and wire fraud as well as money laundering. He's to receive a seven-year prison term and must pay more than $74,000 in restitution.

The 37-year-old still faces state theft charges. He's to be tried August 27th in Jefferson Circuit Court. Kelly was heard on Louisville's WDJX-FM.
