Governor Signs Death Warrant For Convicted Killer

For only the third time in the last 30 years, Kentucky is scheduled to execute a death row inmate.
Wednesday, Governor Fletcher signed a death warrant, setting Ralph Baze's execution for September 25.
Baze was convicted for the 1992 murders of Powell County Sheriff Steve Bennett and Deputy Arthur Briscoe.
Many friends and family members of both Bennett and Briscoe say they're glad an execution date has been set, as it's something they've waited years for.
The Powell County courthouse will be closed September 25 in honor of Sheriff Bennett and Deputy Briscoe.
As for signing the death warrant, Governor Fletcher says it was a decision he made after a lot of thought.
"The evidence was clear, there was an admission, and I think it's appropriate to do this," Fletcher said. "It's not something I take lightly, but I think it's a responsibility, it's the right thing to do."
Democratic candidate for governor Steve Beshear would not comment on the Baze case, but does say he supports the death penalty for some crimes.
