First Black State Supreme Court Justice Dies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Former Kentucky Supreme Court Justice William E. McAnulty has died at his home in Louisville's Highlands.

McAnulty resigned his seat two weeks ago while undergoing radiation therapy for lung cancer that had spread to his brain.

The 59-year-old McAnulty served nearly 30 years on the bench and was the first black to serve on the high court. He died last night, only two weeks days after the battle with cancer that forced him to step down.

McAnulty was diagnosed in June with lung cancer, underwent surgery last month and initially said he planned to remain on the court. But after suffering a fall and broken collarbone, he decided to resign in the interest of his family and the public.

McAnulty was appointed last year by Governor Fletcher and won election in November.
