LUDLOW, Ky. (AP) - Flags are flying at half-staff at Kentucky state office buildings in honor of a Kentucky National Guardsman from northern Kentucky who died in Afghanistan.
The military says 25-year-old Staff Sergeant Nicholas Carnes of Ludlow died Sunday in Afghanistan of wounds from small-arms fire when his unit came under attack by insurgents.
Carnes was assigned to the Battery A, Second Battalion, 138th Field Artillery, based in Carrollton. He deployed in March.
He had been a member of the Guard since 1999. He's survived by his wife, Teresa Bernstein; and his parents, Wray Carnes of Dayton and Gove Carnes of Williamstown.
