FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division will be deployed this month to battlefronts in Iraq and Afghanistan. For many, it will be their third deployment.
Lieutenant Colonel R.J. Lillibridge didn't offer false reassurances during a recent meeting. The commander for the First Battalion, 187th Infantry told hundreds of soldiers and their families that the unit had nine soldiers killed last year. He said more would probably be killed on the next deployment.
The pre-deployment meetings for families focus on the worst possible scenarios - making a list of next of kin for notification, whether soldiers should have wills, the process for getting injured soldiers home.
