A convicted killer, scheduled to be put to death later this month, has asked Governor Fletcher to cancel his execution.
Governor Fletcher's General Counsel, David Fleenor, says Ralph Baze's attorneys sent a document containing more than a thousand pages to request clemency. The petition claims Assistant Attorney General David Smith misrepresented the facts of the case in order to win.
Baze was convicted of the 1992 shooting deaths of Powell County Sheriff Steve Bennett and Deputy Arthur Briscoe.
Baze is scheduled to be executed on September 25th.
Fleenor says the request for clemency has been given to Governor Fletcher who will consider it.
