A citation has been issued after a massive sewage spill that killed dozens of fish in a Fayette County creek.
The Environmental Public Protection Cabinet issued the notice of violation to the Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant. The spill back on August 31st left more than three million gallons of partially treated sewage into the Elkhorn Creek.
The spill was caused by a power outage at the plant, owned and operated by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. The EPPC says plant officials did not notify environmental officials for more than 12 hours after the spill.
The Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant has seven days to provide EPPC with a full report on the spill and will have to pay the state back for all the costs of cleaning up the spill.
