FRANKFORT, KY - Hoping to draw more international visitors, The Kentucky Department of Tourism has opened a tourism office in Japan.
Gov. Ernie Fletcher said the state also is expanding its tourism office in England to reach out to Ireland and Germany.
"With the Kentucky Derby, the 2008 Ryder Cup, the 2010 Alltech World Equestrian Games and all of the other international events making Kentucky their home, it is time for us to expand our efforts to attract people from all over the world to visit the commonwealth," Fletcher said in a statement.
Fletcher said Kentucky's new office in Japan will be managed by Advance International Ltd. of Tokyo.
"With horses, bourbon, bluegrass music and friendly people, Kentucky is the kind of genuinely American destination Japanese tourists are seeking today," said Marjorie Dewey, president of Advance International Ltd. of Tokyo, which manages the Japan office.
Kentucky also has a tourism office in Canada, and Tourism Commissioner Randy Fiveash is looking into the possibility of opening an office in China.
