A major winter storm is on the way to the bluegrass state. Local high water issues are possible early Wednesday and that will be followed up by heavy snow and sleet. Significant accumulations are likely Wednesday night and Thursday.
A miner has been killed after an accident at an underground mine.
The accident happened Thursday afternoon at the Leeco 68 mine in the Jeff community of Perry County.
That mine is owned by James River Coal.
The victim was taken to a hospital in Hazard, where he was pronounced dead. He's been identified as 29-year-old Bobby Smith of Vicco.
The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration will investigate the accident.
State officials say this is the fifth mine-related fatality in Kentucky this year.
