Family and Friends Remember Fallen Kentucky Soldier

Video will be available shortly

Another Kentucky National Guardsman has died making him the third in just two weeks.

Private First Class Sammie E. Phillips died Monday at 19 years-old in Iraq when his car overturned near a traffic checkpoint. Today those who worked closely with him are remembering the young man.

Those who knew Private Sammie Phillips describe him as an excellent gunman with unlimited potential. Guard officials are mourning the loss of one they say was "the cream of the crop.'

A 2006 North Hardin High School graduate, Private Phillips was assigned to the 138th field artillery based out of Carlisle, Kentucky.

19-year-old Phillips joined the Kentucky National Guard last year and left for Iraq just last month. He is the third Kentucky Guardsman in just two weeks to be killed in action.

The driver of the army vehicle was trying to avoid a civilian car that was coming straight for them. Two other soldiers inside the car were injured. Phillips leaves behind a 19-year-old wife Ashley Marie and is survived by his mother and step-father.

Phillips is the 18th Kentucky soldier to die in combat.

Funeral services for a member of Phillips' unit who died last week will take place Friday. The body of Staff Sargent Delmar White arrived Monday morning at Blue Grass Airport.

He died September 2nd after a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy.

Friends and family will remember White later this week. His funeral is set for Friday at noon at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington. A graveside memorial will follow at Camp Nelson Cemetery in Jessamine County.
