UK Elects First Female Chair For Board of Trustees

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The University of Kentucky has elected its first woman to lead its Board of Trustees after a surprising change in nominations.

Mira Ball of Lexington had been nominated to serve as vice chair, but chairman nominee Steve Branscum announced at the beginning of the meeting he was withdrawing his name and nominating Ball for the top spot.

Branscum had been criticized by some trustees for his political connections to Governor Ernie Fletcher.

Ball won by an 11-6 vote with two abstentions. Branscum was elected vice chair.
