INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana officials and methadone clinic operators are defending the clinics' practice of giving drug addicts take-home doses of methadone.
Some state lawmakers say that take-home doses of the drug used to ease withdrawal pain for users of heroin, morphine, OxyContin and other opiates contribute to the number of Kentucky addicts who come to Indiana clinics.
Methadone clinic regulators and operators, however, told the Health Finance Commission that addicts from Kentucky and Ohio come to Indiana clinics to avoid two- to three-year waiting lists in their home states.
The Southern Indiana Treatment Center in Jeffersonville served nearly two thousand patients in 2005, with about two-thirds coming from Kentucky.
