MADISONVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A 30-year-old western Kentucky man who entered a plea of guilty to third-degree fetal homicide has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Kevin Williams of Madisonville had entered the guilty plea in June, admitting that his reckless actions caused his girlfriend Shala Tandy to abort her three-month-old fetus.
Police reports say Williams was the father of the child. The state legislature passed a law in 2004 making first-degree fetal homicide a crime punishable by death. The third-degree charge signifies the death was the result of reckless actions.
Police said Williams became violent during an argument with Tandy and struck and kicked her in the abdomen. Tandy was treated for minor injuries at Regional Medical Center, but miscarried the child.
