State police are investigating a disturbing case out of Johnson County. Police tell 27NEWSFIRST a baby was nearly smothered after baby wipes were allegedly stuffed down it's throat.

Kentucky State Police say hospital officials extracted two baby wipes that were lodged in 8-month-old Braden Childres' throat. Police have arrested Jonathan Crum, 29, on first-degree criminal abuse. Crum is the boyfriend of the baby's mother, Shauna Childers, who was also arrested on complicity of criminal abuse charges.

State police say Childers took the baby to the emergency room around 7:30 a.m. Friday morning, on September 7th, complaining he was not breathing well.

Police say the hospital then notified state police about the incident, which started the criminal abuse investigation. Officials tell us the baby is in intensive care and listed in serious condition.

Both Childers and Crum are being held in the Johnson Co. Detention Center.
