Police Track Suspected Bank Robber Down Using GPS Device

Updated: Fri 6:10 PM, Sep 14, 2007

CINCINNATI (AP) - Police using global positioning technology
stopped traffic on a major interstate heading into downtown Friday
morning and went car-to-car until they found a couple suspected in
a suburban bank robbery.

A bank employee who gave the couple the money about 10 a.m. put
a global positioning device in the money bag, and officials at PNC
Bank in Evendale were able to give police possible locations of the
robbers by the time officers arrived.

Police stopped southbound traffic for about an hour on
Interstate 71 just north of downtown Cincinnati and closed the ramp
to I-471 to keep the suspects from crossing the Ohio River and
entering Kentucky.

Officers from several jurisdictions responded and found the
couple, Kenneth and Jewell Maples, both 41, of Louisville, Ky., in
a white pickup truck.

Both have been charged with aggravated robbery and were being
held in the Hamilton County jail.
