Man cleared of deadly shooting sues over incarceration

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky man cleared of a 1993 deadly
shooting and robbery after spending almost a decade in prison is
suing the city of Louisville and the police department after
evidence definitively pointed to another man.
Edwin Arnell Chandler, 37, of Louisville, filed suit Wednesday
in U.S. District Court in Louisville.
In October, Jefferson Circuit Judge Frederic Cowan exonerated
Chandler in the death of 25-year-old Brenda Whitfield. She was shot
Sept. 28, 1993, during a robbery at a Chevron Food Mart where she
worked.
A grand jury charged the other man, 45-year-old Percy Phillips,
of Louisville, with Whitfield's slaying. Phillips was in state
custody serving 20 years on an unrelated assault conviction. His
case is pending in state court.
